I grew up near water on all sides. It helps me breathe.
When I packed my Toyota Tercel years ago with all my belongings to come to Chicago, I didn’t know what to expect. I got three warnings from fellow Californians before I came:
“Ice falls from the sky,” they said, “from nowhere!” Okay. I can deal with that. I can just avoid “nowhere,” right?
“Yeah,” they said, “but you can’t even walk around Chicago without a problem. They tie ropes onto buildings to grab onto, so people won’t blow away. That wind off the lake, you know.” Okay, so that sounded sketchy, but the part about the lake, and the wind, sounded believable.
But the most disturbing thing, more so than being clobbered with ice from nowhere or blowing away, had to do with being cosmetically altered.
“Your hair will snap off when you leave it wet,” they whispered, “on the way to the bus.” Okay, not good.
Most of my work has combined my loves: editing and writing about a new topic. For a while, I wrote about horses. Then banking. Then film. Then travel. Then automotive. Then hair and beauty. I love learning a new industry and am good at immersing myself and coming up with a clean, interesting angle.
My interests and values have changed over the years. I am okay with ice hitting me out of nowhere, grabbing onto ropes if I need them, being blown away, or even being cosmetically altered, with my hair falling off.
And I’m happy about being in this place, Chicago, though now I live a little north of the city, in Evanston, with a great guy and a hilarious cat named Inspector Clouseau. I never thought a cat could have such a sense of humor, but he does, and he freaks himself out on a daily basis.
I, on the other hand, don’t make a habit of freaking myself out. I just do what I love to do, and I look forward to applying that passion in my next opportunity. Let’s talk!
